Frequent Characteristics of Anxiety
It is a particular emotional reaction, which may be accompanied by a variety of physical symptoms, such as difficulty in swallowing, diarrhea, muscle tension or irregular heartbeats.
Stress is one of the most common of all emotions. In some situations such as one involving physical danger, anxiety is an appropriate reaction. In others, either the degree of anxiety or the nervous reaction itself isn’t warranted by the situation.
Anxiety is a natural reaction to something that threatens health or wellbeing. Throughout life, the majority of us are subjected to a lot of stressful situations that provoke anxiety. However, if the degree of anxiety is inappropriate to its origin, is exaggerated beyond reason or is caused by unlikely events, the answer is usually considered abnormal and may require treatment.
Appropriate anxiety is chiefly characterized by worry. For example, if your job is threatened, you might be constantly thinking of where else you might find employment and be planning steps for getting a new position.
If, however, the dread of job loss isn’t realistic, then the anxiety breeds more anxiety. This type of anxiousness without any identifiable cause quite often impairs the individual’s ability to function.
The origins of such internal emotional problems are still not fully understood. On occasion, they could be traced to childhood experiences. This is often true of phobias, like a fear of dogs that could be traced to a childhood dog snack. Another typical example of a phobia is agoraphobia (fear of open spaces), in which anxiety is aroused when someone attempts to leave the familiar setting of the home. In about half of all cases of clinical anxiety, however, there’s absolutely no discernible cause.
In some, however, anxious feelings and thoughts are almost constantly present in what’s known as an anxiety state. This chronic state occasionally peaks in a “panic attack,” which can happen without any apparent reason at any time. The physical symptoms of fear increase to such a frightening extent that the victim may, in reality, think that he or she’s suffering a heart attack. Hyperventilation, or over-breathing, is common during panic attacks and may cause light-headedness and even to fainting.

When someone is anxious, certain body processes speed up. The physical symptoms include breathing irregularities, particularly hyperventilation; muscle tension; perspiration, and an increased pulse rate. Any of these symptoms should be reported to a physician and carefully evaluated.
Treatment of Anxiety
There are a number of approaches to consider in treating anxiety. On occasion, practicing relaxation techniques like meditation, or taking a warm bath or exercising may help in overcoming mild anxiety. If hyperventilation is a problem, breathing into a paper bag will help overcome the over-breathing and feelings of light-headedness.
Medication may also be recommended to help the patient cope more effectively with stress, particularly the unwarranted anxiety which has no apparent cause. Most commonly, the medication prescribed is one of the tranquilizing drugs. These drugs, like any medication, should be obtained only according to your physician’s instructions. They should not be taken in conjunction with alcohol, and your physician should be aware of any other medicine you may be taking.
For instance, an agoraphobic undergoing desensitization will be assisted, in a series of graduated steps, to encounter the crowds and public spaces that cause anxiety. Numerous other therapies, including psychotherapy, are used in treating anxiety.
Most anxiety is normal and many emotional conflicts can be discussed with family or friends with great results. However, if these typical way of dealing with problems don’t prove adequate, and if anxiety produces undue distress, professional help is advisable. Numerous effective treatments, which might include the use of tranquilizing drugs, can help those who suffer anxiety to live more comfortable and productive lives. Bear in mind, no one is immune from anxiety.
